Pledge to Protect Park Space at BBQ Event

Pledges to Bring Community, Private Sector and Political Experience,
Common Sense Judgment, and Principle to Office

St. Albert, AB – Tuesday, June 24, 2017

The BBQ at 59 Sturgeon Road in Red Willow Park on June 24, 2017 was a success, with an estimated 200 residents attending over the 2 hour event hosted by Cam MacKay to lend their support to his campaign for Mayor. There were also 10 potential council candidates in attendance who stopped by to learn about the issue and to say hi.

“It was great to see so many people at the event, and get a chance to learn more about the concerns and ideas of residents.  I appreciate the support and positive energy and I’m looking forward to a great campaign.

This was also an opportunity for people to learn about this proposed land swap, the current land use policies in place and what can be done to preserve parks and greenspace in our community.” said Cam MacKay.

The event included a tour of the site and a discussion on the history of this proposed land swap whereby the current park space at 59 Sturgeon Road is proposed to be swapped with land in the floodway along the back of lots 53 to 57 Sturgeon Road.

Cam MacKay also highlighted at the event one of his platform priorities for the next term on council, which is to protect park space in St. Albert. “Protecting park space is just as important to me today as it was 7 years ago when I first ran for council.” Cam will work to protect park space in St. Albert by making three promises:

  1. “If elected Mayor I will not support the proposed land swap for park space proposal for 53-57 Sturgeon Road.”
  2. “I will ensure that when any proposed land swap for park space is proposed that an appraisal by a qualified appraiser is performed.”
  3. “I will ensure that a policy should be in place to preclude any large scale redevelopment of park space to facilitate private development.”

“It’s great to have a person with common sense, and who understands the importance of parks in our community running for Mayor, “stated, Bill Whitney, President of a local community group.
